Rooflight & Skylight Cleaning
The Windows Nobody Ever Cleans
Rooflights are the only part of a building designed purely to let light in, and they are almost always the last thing anyone thinks to clean. Years of algae, moss, traffic film, and industrial fallout build up on the surface, and nobody looks at it until the space underneath has quietly gone dim and everyone has got used to it.
However, the change once they are cleaned is the part that surprises people. A warehouse that has been running its lights all day suddenly no longer needs to, and a room at home regains the brightness it had when the roof window was installed.
We clean rooflights and skylights of every kind:
- GRP and profiled rooflight panels on industrial roofs
- Glass and polycarbonate skylights on commercial buildings
- Atrium and walkway glazing
- Velux and other domestic roof windows
- Lantern lights and flat roof skylights
- Frames, seals and surrounds cleaned at the same time

Cleaning Skylights in Industrial Units & Warehouses
Free Light You Are Already Paying For
On an industrial roof, the rooflights are usually GRP panels set into the profiled sheet, and they weather far faster than the surrounding metal. The surface also becomes porous, traps dirt and algae, and yellows with age, so a roof designed to daylight the floor below ends up doing very little of that.
The issue is, most site managers only notice when they see a cleaned panel next to a dirty one (as shown in the image).
That has a cost attached too because if the rooflights aren’t working, the lights are on all day instead, whatever the weather is doing outside. It can also come up in audits too, since employers have a duty to provide suitable lighting and to use natural light where it’s reasonably practicable, so a working area that has quietly gone dim is something an inspector may well raise.
Cleaning the panels is one of the few jobs on a building that pays you back rather than just making it look better.
It’s important to note that industrial roofs are fragile, meaning the panels themselves cannot support weight, and the work must be done without anyone standing on the covering. That’s why we always use powered access or towers, depending on the building, and hire in a MEWP when the roof calls for it, so the panels are cleaned from above without anyone putting a foot on them. It sits alongside our commercial exterior cleaning and industrial and warehouse cleaning work, and most sites have us do the lot in one visit.
Velux & Domestic Roof Window Cleaning
The Ones You Cannot Reach
Roof windows at home have the same problem but on a smaller scale. For example, a Velux in a loft conversion or a lantern light over a kitchen extension sits at an angle that collects everything the weather brings, and unlike the windows downstairs, there is no easy way to get to it. Most people clean the inside but give up on the outside, letting it go green.
At JCY Exterior Cleaning, we clean them properly from the outside, including the frames, seals, and surrounding roof area, and clear the moss and debris that gather around the flashing, where they can start to hold water. If the glass is part of a conservatory or a glazed roof rather than a single window, our conservatory roof cleaning covers that instead, and we will tell you which one you actually need.
Frequently Asked Questions
Our Skylight Cleaning FAQs
Yes, and without anyone standing on it. We work from powered access or towers, so the panels are cleaned from above, and we hire in a MEWP where the building calls for it.
Cleaning removes the algae, dirt, and surface film, which cause most of the light loss. GRP that has yellowed all the way through with age will not go back to new, and we will tell you honestly which one you are looking at before we start.
Once a year suits most buildings, though sites near heavy traffic, industry or trees usually need it more often. We’ll suggest a sensible interval once we have seen the roof.
Yes. We clean roof windows, lantern lights and flat roof skylights at home as well, including the frames and the roof area around them.
